Ironworks Consulting Selected by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to Design New Website

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

RICHMOND, Va.  (January 26, 2010) – Ironworks, a management, Web and IT consulting firm, has been awarded a contract with the Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA) on behalf of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) to design and build its new website.

Ironworks will implement a new content management system along with a full creative redesign of the VMFA’s site (www.vmfa.museum), creating a fresh and engaging user experience. The content management system will offer the Museum content owners more control of the website, while establishing the foundation to more easily expand site functionality and better align with the future vision around social media, online collections, user-contributed content, and more.

The new website comes at an exciting time for VMFA, in the midst of a massive expansion project that will add 165,000 new square feet to its existing 380,000 square-foot building.  Expected to be completed by May of 2010, the new space and site will transform the way visitors experience VMFA exhibits, both in its Richmond, VA, location as well as on the Web.

“The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is transforming its existing galleries with the addition of the James and Frances McGlothlin Wing, the Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden and a 600 space parking deck museum complex,” states director Alex Nyerges. “Not only will the galleries be dynamic with increased space for permanent collections and special exhibitions, the overall visitor experience will be accessible, inclusive and fun. We are confident that the new website will reflect the museum experience and overall quality that represents a top ten museum such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,” he continued.

The six-month bidding process was extremely competitive, with Ironworks beating out many other reputable firms.  Ironworks, founded in 2001 and headquartered in Richmond, VA, with 250 employees across 5 offices, is known for bringing strategy and design capabilities along with the technical expertise to deliver the most appropriate solution for the client.  “We are very excited to be working with VMFA to build the online presence in conjunction with the major transformation underway for the Museum.” said Will Loving, Ironworks Co-Founder and COO.
